How do I transfer practice performance into competition?
A 3-step exercise
Here's the competition-transfer exercise I give athletes. The reason it works is simple: it rehearses the pressure, not just the skill. You can start it this week.
Step 1 — Add the stakes in practice: Put something on one rep: a consequence, a small audience, a “this one counts” before you go. Your nervous system needs reps at game-day arousal, not only calm reps. Pressure you've felt before feels familiar instead of threatening.
Step 2 — Anchor a one-breath reset: Before that pressure rep, run the exact same reset every time — one slow exhale plus a personal cue word (“ready,” “smooth,” “next”). Same sequence in practice becomes the same sequence in the game, and it gives your attention a job so it can't drift to the judgment.
Step 3 — Debrief the response, not the result: Afterward, ask “Where did my attention go?” — not “Did it go in?” You're training the process you can control. Over a few weeks, your default under pressure becomes “return to the task” instead of “brace for the outcome.”
