BREAK IT DOWN - STEPS FOR SUCCESS

Updated: May 30

FALL – MIDTERMS – APPROACHING HOLIDAYS – SEASON FOR ILLNESS - GETTING COLDER

BREAK IT DOWN

All these stressors stack up upon each other making small things feel bigger and harder. There’s one main strategy that we can use to decrease stress and anxiety.  Steps for success or breaking things down into smaller, more manageable pieces, gives us a sense of control. If it’s still too big, keep breaking down each piece smaller and smaller until there’s a piece that’s manageable. Once completed, move onto another small piece.

If something doesn’t usually stress you out and it is feeling overwhelming, don’t take up time being upset at yourself because it doesn’t help. It is what it is. Don’t waste your time and energy on negativity. Accept that this is the way it is, accept it’s not favorable, and move forward.  Acceptance is key!

We won’t move forward if we don’t face what’s in our path. Acceptance doesn’t mean we are ok with it. Acceptance is the beginning of change. Acceptance means we are willing to face it, look it up and down, and assess it. This is where change begins because we know where we are starting. If you’re not happy with accepting and have some control, then change what’s in your control.

1. STEPS FOR SUCCESS - ASK YOURSELF, “WHAT CAN I DO?” OR “WHAT IS IN MY CONTROL?”

2. STEPS FOR SUCCESS - ASK YOURSELF, “WHAT DO I NEED TO DO FIRST?”

If what you need to do first feels too big, break that down. For example, a collegiate student-athlete needs to take 2 exams and start a project. Studying for one exam might be split up into parts every day. Maybe getting the project outlined feels too big, so you look at the syllabus and what’s been done in the past to get ideas about what you want to do.

As long as it’s not completely unreasonable, there is always a way! It’s about attitude and perseverance.  We need to have faith and believe that there is always a way, hang tough day after day to find it.
